| power | the rate at which work is done |
| kinetic energy | the energy of an object in motion |
| potential energy | the energy an object has because of it's position |
| mechanical energy | the energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position |
| machine | any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done |
| mechanical advantage | the number of times the machine multiplies the input force |
| mechanical efficiency | a comparison of a machine's work output with the work input |
| lever | a simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point |
| fulcrum | the fixed point a lever pivots |
| wheel and axel | a simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a cylindrical object, the axle |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable |
| inclined plane | a simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface |
