Work, Energy, and Machines
| Term | Definition |

| Work | The use of force to move an object some distance in the direction of the force. |
| Energy | Ability to work. |
| Power | Rate at which work is done. |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of motion. |
| Potential Energy | Energy an object has because of its position. |
| Mechanical Energy | Energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position. |
| Machine | Any device that helps people do work. |
| Mechanical Advantage | Number of times a machine multiplies input force. |
| Mechanical Efficiency | Comparison of the machines output with the work input. |
| Lever | Simple machine that has a bar that pivots on a fixed point. |
| Fulcrum | Fixed point that can be pivoted from. |
| Wheel and Axle | Simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object, the axle. |
| Pulley | Simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable. |
| Inclined Plane | Simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface. |
