Work, energy, and machines

| work | the use of force to move an object in some distance in the direction of a force |
| energy | the ability to do work |
| power | the rate at which work is done |
| Kinetic energy | the energy of motion |
| potential energy | the energy an object has because of its position, condition, and chemical composition |
| Mechanical energy | energy possessed by an object due to its position and motion |
| Machine | any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done |
| Mechanical advantage | the number of times the machine multiplies the input force |
| Mechanical effciency | a comparison of machines work output with the work input |
| fulcrum | a fixed point that a bar pivots at |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine that is made p of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object called axle |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable |
| inclined plane | a simple machine that is a straight slanted surface |
| lever | a simple machine tat has a bar that pivots at a fixed point |
