| potential energy | the energy of an object because of position, condition, or chemical composition |
| mechanical energy | energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position |
| machine | any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done |
| mechanical advantage | number of times the machine multiplies the input force |
| mechanical efficiency | a comparison of a machine's work output with the work input |
| lever | a simple machine with a bar that pivots around a fixed point |
| fulcrum | the fixed point a lever pivots around |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object, the axle |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a grooved weel that holds a rope or a cable |
| inclined plane | a simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface |
