| work | the use of force to move an object in the direction of that force |
| energy | the ability to do work |
| power | the rate at which work is done |
| Kinetic Energy | the energy of motion |
| Potential Energy | the energy an object has because of its position, condition, or chemical composition |
| Mechanical Energy | the energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position |
| machine | any device that helps people do work by changing how that work is done |
| Mechanical advantage | the number times the machine multiplies the input force |
| Mechanical efficiency | a comparison of a machines work output with the work input |
| lever | a simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point |
| fulcrum | the fixed point on a lever |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object, the axle |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or cable |
| inclined plane/ ramp | a simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface |
