Work, Energy, and Machines
| Term | Definition |

| Work | The force to move an object some distance in the direction of the force. |
| Energy | The ability to do work. |
| Power | The rate at which work is done. |
| Kinetic Energy | The energy of motion. |
| Potential Energy | The energy an object has because of its position, condition, or chemical composition. |
| Mechanical Energy | The energy possessed by a object due to its motion and position. |
| Machine | Any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done. |
| Mechanical Advantage | The number of times the machine multiplies the input force. |
| Mechanical Efficiency | A comparison of a machine's work output with the work input |
| Lever | A simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point. |
| Fulcrum | The fixed point in a lever. |
| Wheel and Axle | A machine that is made of a wheel connected to a small cylindrical object, the axle. |
| Pulley | A simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or cable. |
| Inclined Plane | A simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface. |
