Hand Lens A magnifying glass that is held in the hand
Magnifier A tool that makes something appear larger than it is
Observations Pieces of information that you get from your five senses
Properties Observed characteristics of an object
concave curving inward like a bowl
convex curved or rounded on the outside
field of view The maximum area that is visible through the lens of an optical instrument
focus To adjust the position of a lens in order to make a clear image
Opaque Not allowing light to pass through
Transparent Clear; sheer enough to see through
Translucent Allowing only some light to pass through so that things cannot be seen clearly. For example: frosted glass
Micro A prefix meaning small
Microfiche A film that has a photographic record of printed material or a picture or drawing on a small scale
Microscope A device used to view things that are too small to be seen with the eye alone
Specimen A sample used to represent an entire group
Stage The small platform on which an object is placed for examination with a microscope
Micrometer A unit used to measure very tiny objects
Cover Slip A piece of glass or clear plastic that is placed over the specimen on a microscopic slide
Flat Slide A flat glass or clear plastic surface used as a slide
Well slide A slide with ta reservoir used when viewing 3D or liquid specimens
Wet-Mount Slide Slide created whena drop of water and coverslip are placed on a flat slide
Forceps Tweezers used to pick up small specimens
Microbes A living thins so small that is can be seen only witha microscope. Also called a microorganism
