Text Features and Purposes

Text FeaturePurpose
title tells the topic of the text
table of contents tells what the major chapters of the book will be about and where they are
headings and subheadings tells what the major sections of a chapter will be about
captions and labels tells what pictures, diagrams, and graphs are showing us
bold print words show us important vocabulary words
index tells where we can find specific information on topics in the book
glossary gives definitions of important vocabulary in the text
graph to organize information containing numbers
diagram to show the parts of something
chart or table to compare information visually
map to show locations, routes, and events
time line to show when things happened
map legend to explain the meanings of the colors and symbols on a map
