| assonance | the occurrence of the same vowel sound in the middle of words EX: "Try to light the fire" |
| connotation | an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning |
| denotation | the literal or primary meaning of a word |
| paradox | a statement that leads to a senseless conclusion or seems logically impossible EX: "You can save money by spending it." |
| allusion | an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly EX: "This place is like the Garden of Eden!" - biblical allusion |
| consonance | the repetition of consonant sounds in the middle or end of words EX: The ship has sailed to the far off shores. She ate seven sandwiches on a sunny Sunday last year. Shelley sells shells by the seashore. |
| concrete poetry | poetry in which the meaning or effect is conveyed partly of wholly by visual means, by using patters of words or letters or other typographical devices EX: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero/wright/teachers/wfomanual/langarts/poem.html |
