Forms of Energy

TermDefinition
Energy Is the ability to do work, to make things move
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be transformed
Potential Energy It is the stored energy and the energy of position
Kinetic Energy It is the energy of motion and depends on speed and mass.
Chemical Energy It is the energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules
Mechanical Energy It is the energy stored in objects by tension in moving parts.
Thermal Energy It is the vibration and movement of particles within a substance as an object is heated up
Nuclear Energy It is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom — the energy that holds the nucleus together.
Sound Energy It is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal (compression/rarefaction) waves.
Electrical Energy It is the energy produced due to the flow (or moving) charges in a conductor.
Mechanical; a type of kinetic A moving turbine would be an example of using what type of energy?
Electrical Electricity is an example of what type of energy?
At the top of the highest hill On a roller coaster where is your maximum "gravitational" potential energy?
At the bottom of the highest hill On a roller coaster where is your maximum kinetic energy?
It is being transfered to the surrounding air If the temperature of a substance is decreasing (going down) what is happening to the thermal energy?
stored energy in the bonds of the atoms in the coal is released: chemical energy What type of energy conversion is taking place by burning coal?
mechanical energy to mechanical energy What type of energy conversion is taking place by steam rotating blades of a mechanical turbine?
mechanical energy to electrical energy What type of energy conversion is causing a mechanical turbine to spin an electric generator?

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
