Pressure the force per unit areas that the atmosphere exerts on everything in it
Humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air
Depression a region of low atmospheric pressure
Temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is
Anamometer an instrument to record wind speed
Hygrometer an instrument that measures humidity
Barometer an instrument that measures air pressure
Thermometer an instrument that shows temperature
Tropical warm throughout the year
Polar very cold throughout the year
Continental hot summers, cold winters
Cool Temperate changeable, generally cool with rain any time of year
Carbon Dioxide a gas present in small quantities in air
Conserve to save or take care of something
Greenhouse Effect the way in which gases, such as carbon dioxide, trap heat in the atmosphere
Global Warming the increase in average temperature of the Earth caused by increased amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
Ozone a special kind of oxygen with three atoms in each molecule instead of two
Ozone Layer a layer of gas high in the atmosphere that blocks UV radiation from the Sun
UV invisible rays from the Sun that can damage the skin
CFCs manmade chemicals that were once used in aerosols and refrigerators
Gravity the force that pulls things to the ground
Magnetic Force the force that attracts a steel ball to a magnet
Friction the force that warms your hands when you rub them
Elastic Force the force you feel when you stretch elastic
Lever increases the strength of a force or the distance of movement
Wheel makes the transportation of loads easier
Single Pulley changes the direction of a force
Aquaplane to skid, or slide on the surface of water
Tread the grooves in a tire or on the sole of a shoe
Skidding when a vehicle's wheels lose grip and spin or slide on the road
Wear damage caused by friction
Lubricant a substance such as oil that reduces the friction between two surfaces
Temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is
Heat Source something that gives out heat energy
React when substances combine to make a new substance or substances
Expand to increase in size
Change State to change between two states of matter-solid, liquid, or gas
Solid rigid; has shape and strength
Liquid pours and flows; takes the shape of the container
Gas easily compressed; expands to fill the container
Conduction when heat travels through a solid
Convection how heat travels upwards through a liquid
Radiation how heat moves through gas from warm areas to cold areas
Conductors transfers heat easily (metal is a great conductor)
Insulators slows down or prevents heat transfer (wood, rubber, plastic, cloth)
