Empathizing with and supporting others

TermDefinition
EMPATHIZING cognitive process of identifying with or vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts or attitudes of others
EMPATHIC RESPONSIVENESS experiencing an emotional response parallel to another person's actual or anticipated display of emotion
PERSPECTIVE TAKING imagining yourself in the place of another person
SYMPATHETIC RESPONSIVENESS feeling concern, compassion, or sorrow for another person because he or she is in a distressing situation.
SUPPORTING helping people feel better about themselves and their behaviors
SUPPORTING RESPONSE statement whose goal is to validate, show approval, encourage soothe, console, cheer up, or bolster confidence.
SUPPORTIVE INTERACTION conversation or series of conversations in which support is provided
CLARIFYING SUPPORTIVE INTENTIONS openly stating that one's goal in a supportive interaction is to help the person in need of support
FACE THREATENING ACT (FTA) statement of support that person in need may interpret as a threat to his or her public image
POSITIVE FACEWORK providing messages that affirm a person or a person'a actions in a difficult situation to protect his or her respectability and approval
NEGATIVE FACEWORK providing messages that offer information, opinions, or advice to protect a person's freedom and privacy
OTHER CENTERED MESSAGES messages that focus on the needs of the person in need of support through active listening, expressions of compassion and understanding, and talk encouragement
FRAMING INFORMATION providing support by offering information , observations and opinions that enable the receiver to better understand or see his or her situation in a different light
ADVICE GIVING presenting relevant suggestions and proposals that a person could use to satisfactorily resolve a situation
