Holding Effective Conversations

Conversation an interactive, locally, managed, sequentially organized and extemporaneous interchange of thoughts and feelings between two or more people
small talk message exchanges on inconsequential topics that meet the social needs of participants with low amounts of risk
gossip message exchanges about othr people who are not present in a conversation
information and idea exchanges message exchanges that focus on sharing important facts, opinions, and beliefs in a conversation.
casual social conversations interactions between people whose purpose is to enhance or maintain a relationship through spontaneous exchanges about general topics
PROBLEM CONSIDERATION CONVERSATIONS interactions between people in which the purpose for at least one of the partipants is to elicit cooperation in solving a problem or meeting a specific goal
FORMALITY degree to which a conversation must follow rules and procedures
TURN-TAKING alternating between speaking and listening in a conversation
TOPIC CHANGE method by which people introduce new topics into a conversation
TALK TIME the share of time participants each have in a conversation
SCRIPTEDNESS the use of routine conversational phrases from past encounters applied appropriately to a new situation
CO-NARRATION two people finishing each other' sentences in a conversation because they know each other's style of conversation very well
CONVERSATIONAL AUDIENCE intended and unintended participants in a conversation
RULES unwritten prescriptions that indicate what behavior is required, preferred or prohibited in certain contexts
COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLE principle stating that contributions to a conversation should be cooperative-in line with the shared purpose of the conversation
MAXIMS rules of cooperative conversational partners follow
QUALITY MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by providing information that is truthful in a conversation
QUANTITY MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by providing a sufficient or necessary amount of information to satisfy the informational needs of others in a conversation.
RELEVANCY MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by providing information that is related to the topic currently being discussed in a conversation
MANNER MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by being specific and organized when communicating one's thoughts in a conversation
MORALITY MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by meeting moral/ethical expectations in a conversation
POLITENESS MAXIM the requirement to cooperate by showing respect and courtesy to others during a conversation
CONVERSATIONAL COHERNCE the extent to which the comments made by one person relate to those made previously by others in a conversation
POLITENESS relating to others in ways that meet their need to be appreciated and protected
FACE SAVING helping others to preserve their self-image or self-respect
APPROPRIATENESS being polite and following situational rules of conversation
EFFIFIENCY being direct in the interest of achieving conversational goals in a relatively short amount of time
AUTHENTICITY communicating information and feelings that are relevant and legitimate to the subject at hand directly, honestly, and straightforwardly.
EMPATHY demonstrating an understanding of another person's point of view without giving up one's own position or sense of self
CONFIRMATION expressing a warm affirmation of others as unique persons without necessarily approving of their behaviors or views
PRESENTNESS willingness to become fully involved with another person by taking time avoiding distractions, being responsiveness and risking attatchment
EQUALITY treating conversational partners as peers, regardless of the status differences that seperate them from other participants
SUPPORTIVENESS encouraging the other participants in a conversation to communicate by praising their worthwhile efforts
