Statistics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| F statistic | ratio of between-treatments variance to within-treatments variance. |
| F statistics | no negative values, no two-tailed tests. |
| ANOVA | acronym for analysis of variance. allows for comparison of 2,3,4 or more groups simultaneously using only one alpha level and thus avoids the buildup of alpha error. |
| Assumptions for ANOVA | Independent and random selection of subjects. The dependent variable can be measured on an interval or ratio scale. |
| Assumptions for ANOVA continued | The dependent variable is normally distributed in the population of interest. Homogeneity of variance of the dependent variable in the populations of interest. |
| post hoc tests | conducted after null hypothesis rejected and there are three or more treatment groups. Used to distinguish which means differ significantly. |
| eta squared | effect size for ANOVA |
| Experiment-wise alpha level | accumulated probability of a type I error (rejecting a null hypothesis that is true) |
| one-way analysis of variance | manipulating only one independent variable. |
| between-treatment variance | variability between the treatment groups. Individual differences+Experimental error+Treatment |
| within-treatment variance | variability within a particular sample. Individual differences+Experimental error. |
