Chapter 5 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
period A row in the table.
group A column in the table.
periodic law Repeating patterns.
atomic mass unit One twelfth of a carbon atom.
metals Good conductors of heat and electricity.
transition metals join elements on the right and left side.
nonmetals poor conductors of heat and electricity.
matalloids elements with properties that fall between metals and non metals
periodic table An arrangement of elements in columns based on properties.
valence electron the number of electrons in the outermost energy level.
alkali metals these metals have a single valence electron and are very reactive.
alkaline earth metals they all have two valence electrons.
halogens the elements in group 7A are called halogens.
noble gases The elements in group 8A are noble gases.
