Motion
unit 1 motion lesson 1-4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| position | describes the location of an object |
| reference point | a location in which you compare to other locations |
| motion | change in position over time |
| speed | measure of how far something moves in a given amount of time |
| vector | quantity that has both size and direction |
| velocity | speed in a specific direction |
| acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes |
| centripetal acceleration | acceleration in circular motion |
| force | a push or pull |
| net force | the combination of all the forces acting on an object |
| inertia | the tendency of all objects to resist a change in motion |
| gravity | a force of attraction between objects due to their mass |
| free fall | when gravity is pulling it down and no other forces are acting on it |
| orbit | when it travels around another object in space |
| fluid | anything that can flow and take the shape of its container |
| pressure | the measure of how much force is acting on a given area |
| pascal | the SI unit for pressure |
| atmospheric pressure | pressure caused by the weight of the atmosphere |
| buoyant force | an upward force that fluids exert on all the matter |
| Archimedes' principle | states that the buoyant force acting on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of fluid that the object displays |
