Chapter 5 vocabulary

TermDefinition
Periodic table An arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row.
period Each row in a table of elements
group Each column on a periodic table
Periodic Law The pattern of repeating properties
atomic mass unit The value that depends on the distribution of isotopes
metals Good conductors of electric current and heat
transition metals Elements that form a bridge between the elements on the left and right sides of the table
nonmetals Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electrical current
metalloids Elements with properties that fall between the two categories.
valence electrons An electron that is in the highest occupied energy group of an atom.
alkali metals Elements in group 1A
alkaline earth metals Elements in group 2A
halogens elements in group 7A
noble gases Elements in group 8A
