periodic table an arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row.
period each row in the table of elements.
group each column in the table of elements.
periodic law a pattern of repeating properties.
atomic mass unit one twelfth the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
metals elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity.
nonmetals elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
metalloids elements with properties that fall between nonmetals and metals.
valence electron an electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom.
alkali metals metals with one valence electron and are highly reactive.
alkaline earth metals elements in group 2a
halogens elements in group 7a. 7 valence electrons
noble gases elements in group 8a. except for helium, all have 8 valence electrons.
transition metals elements on the left and right sides of the periodic table.
