| metals | elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity. |
| nonmetals | elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity. |
| metalloids | elements with properties that fall between nonmetals and metals. |
| valence electron | an electron that is in the highest occupied energy level of an atom. |
| alkali metals | metals with one valence electron and are highly reactive. |
| alkaline earth metals | elements in group 2a |
| halogens | elements in group 7a. 7 valence electrons |
| noble gases | elements in group 8a. except for helium, all have 8 valence electrons. |
