Physics Vocab Words

WordDefinition
Motion When the distance between two objects is changing
Reference Point A place or object used for comparison to see if something is moving
Average Speed Distance/time; Overall speed at which an object moves
Instantaneous Speed The speed of an object in one instant
Speed Distance an object travels per time unit Example: 100 kilometers per hour
Velocity Speed in one given direction
Slope Steepness of a line on a graph; Rise/Run
Acceleration The rate at which velocity changes
Force A push or pull on something
Unbalanced Force Forces that make something move because they produce a nonzero net force
Balanced Force Equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions
Newton A unit of measure that equals the force required to accelerate 1 kilogram of mass at 1 meter per second per second
Net Force The total force being applied on an object no matter what kind or at what angle
Friction The force an surface exerts on another when one surface rubs on another
Sliding Friction Friction that occurs when a surface slides on another
Rolling Friction Friction that occurs when a surface rolls on another
Fluid Friction Friction that occurs when an object moves through a fluid
Static Friction Friction that occurs on objects when they do not move
Gravity The force that pulls things towards eachother
Air Resistance When objects fall through air they experience this friction from the air
Free Fall When things fall and the only force acting on them is gravity
Terminal Velocity The greatest velocity an object can achieve
Inertia An objects resistance to motion
Momentum The product of mass and velocity
Law of Conservation of Momentum The law that states momentum does not change if there is no force acting on an object

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
