| Periodic Table | is an arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row |
| Period | each horizontal row on the periodic table there are 7 of them |
| group | verticle columns on the periodic table. there are 18 of them |
| periodic law | groups of elements on the periodic table that have similar electron arrangements and there for similar chemical properties. |
| Atomic Mass Unit | a measurement standard to measure the mass of subatomic particles. based on a C-12 atom |
| Metals | good conductors of electric current and heat. some are extremely reactive. |
| Transition Metals | metals the form a bridge with the elements on the left and the elements on the right of the periodic table. they from compounds with distinctive colors. |
| Non-Metals | elements that are poor conductors of electric current and heat. they have low boiling points and most are gases at room temperatures |
| Metalloids | elements that have properties that fall between metals and non-metals. |
| valence electrons | electron that is in the highest occupied energy level |
| alkali metals | elements in group 1A or 1 |
| Alkaline Metals | elements in group 2A or 2 |
| Halogens | elements in group 7A or 17 |
| Noble Gases | elemets in group 8A or 18 |
