| Work | A transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object move. |
| Power | The amount of work done in a second. |
| Machine | A device that makes doing work easier. |
| Input force | Force that is applied to a machine. |
| Output force | Force applied by a machine. |
| Mechanical advantage | The ratio of the output force to the input force. |
| Efficiency | A measure of how much work put into a machine is converted into useful output work. |
| Simple machine | A machine that does work with one movement of the machine. |
| Lever | A bar that is free to pivot or or turns around a fixed point. |
| Pulley | A grooved wheel with a rope running along the groove. |
| Wheel and axle | Consists of a shaft or axle attached to the center of a larger wheel. |
| Inclined plane | A sloping surface used to reduce the amount of work done to an object. |
| Screw | An inclined plane wrapped around a cylindrical post. |
| Wedge | An inclined plane with 2 sloping sides. |
| Compound machine | When one or more simple machines that work together. |
