Dailey: Waves
Chap 10- Wave Properties & Wave Behaviors
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| crest | highest point on a transverse wave |
| trough | lowest point on a transverse wave |
| transverse wave | wave through which the matter and energy move at right angles |
| compressional wave | wave through which the matter and energy move as parallel lines |
| medium | the matter through which a mechanical wave travels through; gas, liquid, solid |
| compression | the dense part of a compressional wave |
| rarefaction | the least dense (stretched out) part of a compressional wave |
| wavelength | the distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it |
| frequency | the number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point each second |
| Hertz (Hz) | measurement unit for frequency |
| period | the amount of time it takes a wavelength to pass a point |
| What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency? | they are directly inverse (opposites) the shorter the wavlength, higher the frequency, vice-versa |
| wave velocity formula | velocity = frequency x wavelength |
| m/s | wave velocity unit |
| m | wavelength measurement unit |
| amplitude | the amount of energy carried by a wave (large amplitude=large amount of energy) |
| How to measure amplitude on transverse waves? | from the crest to the resting point |
| Wave reflection | waves bounce off a surface |
| Law of Reflection | the angle of incidence = the angle of reflection |
| angle of incidence | the angle of the wave that strikes a surface |
| angle of reflection | the angle of the wave that reflects (bounces) off a surface |
| wave refraction | bending of a wave caused by a change in speed due to medium change |
| Wave diffraction | occurs when an object causes a wave to change direction and bend around it or squeeze through an opening |
| wave constructive interference | waves ADD together-happens when crests of 2 or more transverse waves arrive at same place at same time |
| wave destructive interference | waves SUBTRACT from one another as they overlap-happens when crest of 1 transverse meets the trough of a new wave |
| Do mechanical waves require a medium or not? | YES |
| Name an example of transverse waves | ocean waves |
| Name an example of compressional waves | sound waves |
