| alliteration | the repetition of a beginning consonant sound within a phrase or sentence |
| allusion | a direct or indirect reference in literature to a significant person, event, time, or work of literature |
| antagonist | character or force that opposes the central character (protagonist), thus causing conflict |
| euphemism | a polite word or phrase used in place of an offensive or crude word or phrase |
| hyperbole | a gross exaggeration or overstatement used to provoke a strong emotion, to create humor, or to make a point |
| irony | what results when the actual outcome differs from what is expected |
| dramatic irony | a reader knows something that a character does not know |
| situational irony | the situation differs from our expectations |
| verbal irony | the writer says one thing but means another |
| paradox | a statement that initially seems to contradict itself but, in fact, includes a fundamental truth |
| protagonist | central character in the story who is in conflict with the antagonist |
| style | how the author's specific use of words makes his or her writing distinctive |
| tone | the attitude of the author toward his audience or characters; the writer's use of "voice" or "attitude" to set the mood of the story |
