Analyzing Style LOC Vocabulary

Trope Artful diction (word choice)

Metaphor A comparison of two objects/ideas by saying that one "is" the other
Parallelism A balance within one or more sentences of similar phrases or clauses that have the same grammatical structure
Hyperbole Overstatement
Personification Giving human characteristics to
Juxtaposition The arrangement of two or more ideas, phrases, or words side-by-side or in similar narrative moments for the purpose of comparison, contrast, or rhetorical effect
Annotation Reading with a pen or pencil in hand; includes identifying main ideas, noting unknown words, making connections
