What is Freud's psychoanalytic theory? | Freud thought that the human sexual drive was the most important motivator for human activity. he believed it was the main determinant of personality development. |
What is the ID? | the part of the person that Freud called the "it", consisting of unconscious drives; the individual's reservoir of sexual energy. |
What is a Freudian slip? | when someone makes a mistake in speech or action that seems to express unconscious wishes. |
What is the ego? | The Freudian structure of personality that deals with the demands of reality. |
What is the superego? | the Freudian structure of personality that serves as the harsh internal judge of our behavior; what we often call conscience. |
What are defense mechanisms? | Tactics the ego uses to reduce anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality. |
What are some example of defense mechanisms? | Denial- the ego refuses to ecknowledge anxiety-producing realities. Displacement- directing unacceptable impulses at a less threatening target |

What are Maslow's Hierarchy of needs? | biological, safety, belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization |
What is Roger's explanation of unhappiness? | the problem arises when our need for positive regard from others is not met unconditionally |
What is unconditional positive regard? | Roger's construct referring to the individual's need to be accepted, valued, and treated positively regardless of his or her behavior |
What is conditions of worth? | the standards that the individual must live up to in order to receive positive regard from others |
What are the 3 requirements for optimal functioning? | 1. people need unconditional positive regard 2. individuals can become more fulfilled by interacting with people who are emphatic towards them 3. Genuineness; being open with one's feelings and dropping all pretenses and facades. |
What are trait theories? | Theoretical views stressing that personality consists of broad, enduring dispositions (traits) that tend to lead to characteristic responses |
Who is Gordon Allport? | father of American personality psychology. Believed in order to understand healthy people, we must focus on their lives in the present, not on their childhood experiences |
What are self-reported tests? | alsocalled an objective test or an inventory, a method of measuring personality characteristics that directly asks people whether specific items describe their personality traits |
What are empirically keyed tests? | a type of self-report test that presents many questionnaire items to two groups that are known to be different in some central way |
What is libido? | psychic energy that comes from physical drives. a larger drive to express your body that goes beyond just hunger |
