Academic Vocabulary Terms

| textual evidence | information or a statement taken from a piece of literature |
| analysis | careful examination of something in order to understand it better |
| inference | something that you think is probably true, based on information that you already know |
| complex character | main character that undergoes change as the plot unfolds |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story; it includes 4 stages: exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action |
| theme | the main idea in a work of literature; it is a perception about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader |
| metaphor | a figure of speech that makes comparisons between two things that are basically unlike but that have something in common; do not use "like" or "as" |
| simile | makes a comparison between two things using the word "like" or "as" |
| personification | a figure of speech in which human qualities are attributed to an object, animal, or idea |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words |
