Test 4

QuestionAnswer
How do you know when an atom is stable? when the outside energy level is full
How many valence electrons do most atoms want? 8
What is ionic bonding transferring electrons from one atom to another metals + nonmetals
What do valence electrons have to do with Ionic Bonds? the transfer of electrons
What is an ion? atom with a net positive or negative electric charge
What are the two types of ions? Anion and Cation
What is a covalent bond? the sharing of electrons nonmetals + nonmetals
How are atoms held together in a covalent bond? attractions between the shared electrons and the protons in each nucleus hold the atoms together
What happens when atoms don't share electrons equally? atoms form a polar covalent bond
What happens in a polar covalent bond? atoms with the greater attraction for electrons have a partial negative charge and the other has a partial positive charge
What factors determine whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar? the shape and type of an atom
Name the ionic bond NaCl sodium chloride
Name the covalent bond CO2 carbon dioxide
What is the attraction between a metal action and the shared electrons that surround it called? Metallic Bond
What happens in a metallic bond? the cations in a metal form a lattice that is held in place by strong metallic bonds between the cations and the surrounding valence electrons
What is a neutral group of atoms that are joined together by one or more covalent bonds? molecule
What do Lewis Dot diagrams show? the number of valence electrons in the highest energy level of an atom
What is an ion with a negative charge? Anion
What is an ion with a positive charge? Cation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
