Chapter 31: Chemistry

TermDefinition
Amino Acids Macromolecules that make up proteins.
Anabolism To build up; the construction phase of metabolism.
Atom The smallest unit of an element.
Catabolism To break down; the destruction phase of metabolism.
Covalent Bond The sharing of electrons between two atoms.
Electron The smallest subset of an atom that contains a negative charge.
Enzyme A protein that speeds up a reaction by reducing the amount of energy required to initiate a reaction; also called a biological catalyst.
Ion An atom or group of atoms with a leftover unbalanced charge.
Ionic Bond The transfer of electrons between two atoms.
Macro Large
Metabolism The physical and chemical change that takes place within an organism.
Micro Small
Mole Avogadro's number; 6.02x10(23rd)atoms, molecules, or ions.
Molecule The smallest particle of a compound.
Neutron A subset of an atom that does not contain a charge.
Nucleic Acid The bases contained within DNA.
Orbit The rotation of electrons around the nucleus.
Proton A subatomic particle of an atom that holds a positive charge.
