| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical property | a feature that can be observed with the senses or measured with a tool |
| conduct | to let heat pass through easily |
| dissolve | to mix evenly in a liquid; a substance breaks into tiny pieces that seem to disappear |
| state of matter | the form that matter has, such as solid, liquid, or gas |
| mass | the amount of matter that makes up an object |
| physical change | a change in which no new materials forms |
| chemical change | a change in which one or more new types of matter form |
| chemical property | the ability of a material to react with other materials in a certain way |
| qualitative data | pieces of information that are described in words |
| quantitative data | pieces of information described in numbers and units |
| energy | the ability to make things move or change |
| thermal energy | the energy of the moving particles that make up all matter |
| heat transfer | heat always moves from a warmer object to a cooler one |
| conduction | the transfer of thermal energy between things that are touching |
| conductor | a material through which heat can move easily |
| insulator | a material that heat does not move through easily |
| convection | the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of liquids or gases |
| radiation | the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
