Literary terms

TermsDefinition
Plot The main events of a play, novel, or movie.
Conflict The problem in the story.
Setting Where or when the event takes place.
Characterization 1. Physical Description. 2.A character's speech, feelings, thoughts, or actions. 3.The speech, feelings, thoughts, or actions of other character. 4. Direct comments about character's nature.
Foreshadowing Hints and clues on what might happen in the future.
Flashback Set in a time earlier than the main story.
Point of view who is telling the story. First person: I, me, We Second person Third person: He, she, they
Protagonist The main character of the story ( the good guy)
Antagonist The main source of the conflict ( the bad guy)
Point of view Omniscient third person: Narrator appears to know what everyone is thinking and feeling. Question: Ask yourself is the narrator reliable.
Symbol a person, place, thing, or event used to stand for something abstract,such as an idea or emotions, in a literary work.
Theme Theme is the main idea and the author's statment.
