Literary terms

TermDefinition
Plot Subplot It refers to the actions and events in literature work.Plot is what happens in a story. Subplot is less important in a series of events within the main plot.
Conflict A struggle between two opposing characters or forces.Person Vs. person, person Vs. nature, person Vs. self, person Vs. fate
Setting Setting is the time and place of the action of a story.
Characterization It refers to the techniques that a writer uses to develop characters. 1. Through physical description. 2. Through a character's speech, thoughts, feelings, or actions. 3. Through the speech, feelings, thoughts, or actions of other characters.
Foreshadowing It is a writer's use of hints or clues to indicate events that will occur later in the story.It increase suspense, contributes to mood, and makes the ending seem believable.
Flashback A conversation, an episode, or an event that happened before the beginning of the story. An interruption in the narrative to show something that happened before that time.
Point of view Narrative It refers to the narrative method or kind of narrator used in a literary work. The perspective or vantage point from which the story is told. Narrative supplies information about the characters. -limited first person:I, me, we

Antagonist and Protagonist Protagonist is the main character of the story.:the good guy. Antagonist is the main source of conflict.:the bad guy.
Narrative Narrative supplies information about the characters. -limited first person: I, me, we -limited Third person: He, she, hey -Omniscient Third Person: Narrator appears to know what everyone is thinking and feeling

Symbol person, place, thing, or event used to stand for something abstract, such as an idea or emotion, in a literary work.
