Ch. 2 Review

Phase Changes, Solutions

TermDefinition
Solid Definite shape and volume. Atoms packed together tightly.
Liquid Definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Particles slide around each other.
Gas No definite shape or volume. Will fill up any space it's put in.
Plasma Superheated gas found in stars
Vaporization Liquid to gas
Boiling Liquid to gas that occurs throughout the liquid.
Evaporation Liquid to gas that occurs at the surface of the liquid.
Condensation Gas to liquid.
Freezing Liquid to solid.
Melting Solid to liquid.
Sublimation Solid directly to gas (skips the liquid phase).
Thermal Energy Heat Energy
Boyle's Law As the pressure on a gas increases, its volume decreases.
Charles' Law As the temperature of a gas increases, its volume increases.
Solution A type of mixture in which one substance is dissolved into another.
Solute The part of a solution that gets dissolved (ex. salt in salt water).
Solvent The part of a solution that does the dissolving (ex. water in salt water).
Crystalline Solid Particles are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern. Ex. Salt
Amorphous Solid Can be molded when the temperature rises. Ex. Clay
Saturated A solution that's holding all the solute it can.
Solubility How well a solute dissolves into a solvent.
Suspension A mixture that isn't well mixed. Parts of the suspension can be separated with a filter or screen.
Stirring Allows more solute to be dissolved in a solution.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
