COMPENSATION | Overachievement in one area to offset real or perceived deficiencies in another area ~Napoleon Complex; nurse working double shifts so supervisor will like her; student too small to play football joins cross country team |
CONVERSION | Expression of an emotional conflict through development of physical symptom, usu sensorimotor in nature ~Teen forbidden to see X movies but pressured by friends develops blindness & not concerned |
DENIAL | Failure to acknowledge an unbearable condition, failure to admit the reality of a situation or how one enables problem continuation ~A woman diagnosed with cancer tells her family all tests were negative |
DISPLACEMENT | Ventilation of intense feelings toward person less threatening than the one who aroused initial feelings ~After being scolded at work a man comes home and kicks his dog for barking ~Mad at boss, yell at spouse |
DISSOCIATION | Dealing with emotional conflict by a temp alteration in consciousness or identity ~Amnesia after car wreck ~Adult remembers nothing of childhood sexual abuse |
FIXATION | Immobilization of a portion of the personality resulting from unsuccessful completion of tasks in a developmental stage ~Lack of a clear sense of identity as an adult ~Never learning to delay gratification |
IDENTIFICATION | Modeling actions and opinions of influential others while searching for identity, or aspiring to reach a personal, social, or occupational goal ~Student becoming a Critical Care Nurse because it is the specialty of an admired instructor |
INTELLECTUALIZATION | Separation of the emotions of painful event or situation from facts involved; acknowledging facts but not emotion~Wife of a substance abuser describes, in detail, the dynamics of enabling behavior yet still makes excuses for him |
INTROJECTION | Accepting another person's attitudes, beliefs, and values as one's own (incorporating admired person/groups ideals into self--even if contrary to original personal belief) |
PROJECTION | Unconscious blaming of unacceptable inclinations or thoughts on external object/person ~Person with homosexual thoughts beats a homosexual ~Student attracted to teacher tells others the teacher is "coming on to her/him" |
RATIONALIZATION | Excusing own behavior to avoid guilt, responsibility, conflict, anxiety, or loss of self-respect ~Student blames teacher for failure ~Man beats wife and claims she doesn't listen to him |
REACTION FORMATION | Acting the opposite of what one thinks/feels |
REGRESSION | Moving back to a previous developmental stage to feel safe or have needs met ~5 year old wants a bottle when his infant brother is being fed |
REPRESSION | Excluding emotionally painful or anxiety-provoking thoughts and feelings from consciousness ~No memory for adult before age 7 (when removed from abusive parents) |
RESISTANCE | Overt or covert antagonism toward remembering or processing anxiety-producing information ~Nurse is too busy with tasks to spend time talking to a dying pt |
SUBLIMATION | Substituting a socially acceptable activity for an impulse that is unacceptable ~Ex smoker sucks on hard candy constantly ~Person goes for a walk when tempted to eat junk food |
SUBSTITUTION | Replacing desired gratification with one that is readily available ~Woman wanting children opens daycare |
SUPPRESSION | Conscious (Intentional) exclusion of unacceptable thoughts and feelings from conscious awareness ~Student decides not to think about parent illness to study for test ~Woman tells friend she cannot think of her son's death right now |
UNDOING | Exhibiting acceptable behavior to make up for or negate unacceptable behavior ~Person cheats on spouse then brings spouse a bouquet of flowers (or expensive gift) |
