LD Readings

My responses to readings over Learning Disabilities

QuestionResponse
What was your primary take away from these readings? In "State of Learning Disabilities" text I focused on the fact that nearly 1/3 of LD students are suspended/expelled and 2-3 times more likely to get in trouble. Also in "When Older Students Can't Read" I learned it is best to use effective strategies.
What would you share with another peer? I would share the fact that 42% of SPED students are those with LD. I also found it very disheartening to learn that only 14% of parents think their student with LD is ready for a two or four year college program.
What is one of the primary challenges students with LD face in the classroom? A major issue that students with LD face is graduation rates. According to the text, in 2009 only 64% of students with LD graduated high school.
What would be an area to target as an educator of students with LD? I would choose to heavily focus on the behavior issues that students with LD suffer from. If in trouble, students with LD are not in school then it is impossible to work on any academic areas or graduation.
Juvenile Justice System The "State of Learning Disabilities" article stated that 14% of students in the Juvenile Justice System have been classified as LD.
What can be done? What do you think could be done to address the issues of: Graduation Rate, Behavioral Issues, Test Taking?
How to properly help older struggling readers? In our "When Older Readers Can't Read" article, it is stated that readers will learn with correct instruction techniques.
