Chapter 4

Mixtures, Elements, and Compounds

TermDefinition
Mixture Matter that consists of two or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined.
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture that does not appear to be the same throughout. "Least Mixed" The particles are large enough to be seen and to separate from the mixture.
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that appears to be the same throughout. "Well-Mixed" The particles that make up the mixture are very small and not easily recognizable.
Solution A type of homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in a single physical state. "Best-mixed"
Solute The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
Solvent The substance that does the dissolving in a solution.
Soluble A substance that is able to be dissolved in another substance.
Insoluble A substance that is not able to be dissolved in another substance
Solubility The amount of a solute that can be completely dissolved in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature.
Alloys Metal solutions.
Pure substance A substance that is the same throughout, is made up of only one type of material, and has a definite properties.
Element The simplest pure substance. It cannot be changed into a simpler substance by heating or by any chemical process.
Atom The smallest particle of an element that has properties of that element.
Compound Pure substances that are made of more than one element.
atom mass which is the combined mass of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
