| convergent thinking | thinking directed toward the discovery of a single established "correct" answer- conventional thinking- thinking valued in schools and on standardized tests |
| divergent thinking | thinking that produces many ideas and alternatives- major element of creativity- thinking valued outside of school |
| brainstorming | separating the production and evaluation of ideas |
| cross-stimulation effect | tendency of one person's ideas to trigger ideas from others |
