| microscopic | A word that describes an organism, object, or part of an object that is too small for us to see without the use of a microscope. |
| magnify | to make things appear larger |
| field of view | the area through a magnifying lens that contains the larger or closer view of the object |
| magnifying glass | tool with lenses that make objects look larger so that we can make more detail observations |
| atom | the smallest possible particle of an element having the properties of the element from which it was originally found |
| molecule | the smallest particle of any substance |
| matter | anything that takes up space and has mass |
| property | any characteristic of an object that can be described by using our senses or measured with tools |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| physical properties | characteristics of matter we can observe without causing any change to the object |
| chemical properties | the ability of matter to combine with other matter and from a new substance |
| physical change | when matter changes in shape, size or phase but remains the same substance |
| chemical change | when matter changes and the change causes the substance to become a new or different substance. (example rust) |
| solid | phase of matter in which molecules are most closely attracted to each other |
| liquid | phase of matter that has no definite shape |
| gas | phase of matter that has no definite shape or volume |
| melting point | the temperature at which a solid starts to change into a liquid by melting |
| freezing point | the temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
| condensation point | the temperature at which a gas turns back into a liquid |
| hypothesis | an idea tested by observation or experiment |
| scientific method | steps used in an experiment |
| prediction | a "guess" about what might happen |
