CHEMISTRY
asp 1-A STATES AND CHANGES OF MATTER
| WORDS TO KNOW | DEFINITIONS |
|---|---|
| Boiling | The process in which a liquid turns to a gas, at a constant temperature, and can happen at any location within the liquid |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid turns to a gas at any location throughout the liquid |
| Chemical change | A change in the nature of a material in which new substances are formed |
| Chemical properties | Those properties of a substance that can be determined only by the formation of new materials |
| Condensation | The process in which a gas turns into a liquid |
| Deposition | The process by which a gas becomes a solid without becoming a liquid in between |
| Evaporation | The process in which a liquid turns to a gas, but only at the surface of the liquid |
| Freezing | the process in which a liquid turns into a solid |
| Gas | A material without a fixed volume and without a fixed shape |
| Liquid | A material with a fixed volume but without a fixed shape |
| Melting | The process by which a solid turns into a liquid |
| Melting point | The temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid |
| Physical change | When a material is changed in a manner such that no new substances are formed |
| Physical properties | Those properties of a substance that can be determined without the formation of new materials |
| Solid | A material with a fixed shape and volume |
| Sublimation | The process by which a solid changes to a gas without becoming a liquid in between |
| Freezing point | The temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid |
