Oedipus Rex terms
These are the words for the play Oedipus Rex
| Term | Definition |

| Irony | when there is a discrepancy between two things and comes in three types: verbal, situational, and dramatic |
| verbal irony | when there is a discrepancy between what is said versus what is actually meant. |
| Situational irony | when there is a discrepancy between what is expected to happen versus what actually happens |
| dramatic irony | when there is a discrepancy between what the audience knows versus what the characters in the story actually know. This has the effect of increasing the tension. |
| tragic hero | a main character who, either through bad decisions or flaws, causes their own downfall and greatly impacts the world of the story. |
| theme | the underlying moral, lesson, or statement about the human condition that a story makes. |
| soliloquy | sol=alone loq=words one character on stage revealing their thoughts and intentions directly to the audience. |
| monologue | mono=one log=words one person on stage speaking directly to the audience |
