| cell membrane | a lipid bi-layer that encloses a cell |
| cytoplasm | the jelly-like material in a cell between the nucleus and the cell membrane |
| organelle | a structure within a cell |
| DNA | the genetic materials of cells |
| nucleus | the organelle that contains a eukaryotic cell's DNA |
| eukaryote | a cell that has a nucleus or an organism composed of cells that have a nucleus. |
| prokaryote | a cell that does not have a nucleus or any other membrane covered organelles; also called bacteria |
| cell wall | a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support; only found in plant cells |
| cytoskeleton | a web of proteins that helps with cell support and movement |
| endoplasmic reticulum | the organelle that produces lipids, breaks down toxic substances, and packages proteins for delivery out of the cell |
| mitochondria | organelles that break down food molecules to make ATP(adenosine triphosphate energy) |
| chloroplast | the organelle in which photosynthesis occurs; in plant cells only |
| golgi complex | the organelle that modifies, packages, and transports materials out of the cell |
| vesicle | a membrane-covered compartment |
| lysosome | a vesicle that digests food particles, waste, and foreign invaders |
| vacuole | a vesicle that holds water |
| tissue | a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific job |
| organ | a combination of two or more tissues that work together to form a specific function in the body |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to form specific body functions |
| organism | anything that can independently carry out life processes |
| structure | the shape of a part of an organism and the material that part is made of |
| function | the job a part of an organism does |
| ribosome | the organelle that makes proteins |
