RADT 334 x-ray tube

radiographic physics review covering x-ray tube

QuestionAnswer
What does the filament do? The filament emits electrons when it is heated.
Lists the two types of anodes. Stationary and Rotating.
What type of anode is best used in tubes that don't require high tube current and power? Stationary.
Which type of tube enclosure has the longest life? Metal
True or False? The anode is the negatively charged side of the x-ray tube? False. It is the positive side.
What is the space-charge effect? The space charge makes it difficult for subsequent electrons to be emitted by the filament.
What is space charge? Emitted electrons form a cloud around the filament before releasing to the anode.
List three functions that the anode serves in an x-ray tube? It is an electrical conductor, mechanical support and thermal dissipator.
List the three causes of x-ray tube failure. Heat in the tube, heat of the anode for prolong periods and electron arcing from the filament.
List the three ways heat can be dissipated. Radiation, Conduction and Convection.
What are the three types of x-ray tube rating charts important to the technologist? Radiographic rating chart, anode cooling chart and housing cooling chart.
What is the most important rating chart? Radiographic rating chart.
What area of the tube housing allows the for the x-ray beams to travel towards the patient? Window
Virtually all high-capacity x-ray tubes use what type of enclosures? Metal
What part of the x-ray tube has the filament embedded in it? Focusing cup.
What is the most frequently used support system? Ceiling support.
Name the three different support systems. Ceiling, floor-to-ceiling and C-arm support systems.
What does the protective housing do? Controls leakage and scatter radiation, isolates the high voltages and provides a means to cool the tube.
Why is glass enclosures usually made out of Pyrex? To help withstand the heat generated.
The weaker intensity of x-ray beam is on what side of the tube? The anode side.
What unit is x-ray thermal energy measured in? Heat Units
