Changes in Matter

| physical property | a characteristic that you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance |
| chemical property | a characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance( the ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity) |
| solubility | the amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of another substance |
| physical change | a change in which the form or appearance of matter changes, but not its composition |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
| deposition | the process in what a gas changes directly into a solid (opposite of sublimation) |
| chemical change | a change in which a substance is changed into a different substance with different properties |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | states that during a chemical change, matter is neither created nor destroyed. Particles are rearranged, but the total mass of the matter is the same before and after the change |
