dominant gene | determines the relevant characteristic |
recessive gene | remains hidden if paired with a dominant gene, will be expressed only if paired with another recessive gene |
genotype | genetic map, the actual genetic make-up |
phenotype | physical expression of the genotype |
hereditability | measure of the degree to which a characteristic is related to genetic factors |
norm | societal/ cultural rule for accepted and expected behavior- norms prescribe what is considered proper in a particular society/cultural (setting the table, attire, personal space) |
gender role | societal/ cultural rules and expectations for males and females |
gender typing | socialization process whereby children are taught gender roles |
gender identity | self identification as relatively masculine or feminine |
androgyny | combining characteristics considered traditionally masculine with characteristics considered traditionally feminine |
gender constancy | awareness that one will always be male or female |
gender schema theory | children become aware of differences and take on the task of enforcing and perpetuating traditional gender roles themselves |
