Scientific Method

TermDefinition
Observation Information gathered with the senses
Inference A mental judgement
Science A process of investigation
Assumption Something accepted as true without investigation
Bias Seeing things a certain way whether they are that way or not
Qualitative data/observation A category or label
Quantitative data/observation A count or measurement
Hypothesis A testable statement that proposes a cause and effect relationship between two variables
Experiment Testing a hypothesis under controlled conditions
Variable Any factor that can change during an experiment and affect the results
Dependent variable The measured variable
Independent variable The variable being tested
Constant Any variable that is not allowed to change during an experiment
Control Something to measure experimental results against
Scientific Theory An attempt to explain the evidence based on many investigations
Scientific Law A statement that gives 100% predictability
Model Anything that represents something else
Technology The application of scientific principles or concepts
Blind study A study in which the participants don't know if they are in the control or experimental group
Double-blind study The experimenter and the participants don't know who is in the control or experimental group
Placebo effect Something produces results because it is expected to
