Vocab. for Science

TermDefinition
hypothesis -An explanation based on observed facts or an idea of how things work.(Must be testable)
ethics -A person's sense of right and wrong.
evidence -Information and facts that help prove something.
observation -Information you get through your senses.
inference -Logical conclusions based on observations.
clinical trial -Research done on medicine to see if it is safe and effective.
control group -A group in an experiment that is not tested and is used for comparison.
placebo -A fake medicine given to the control group in a clinical trial.
sample size -The number of people in a clinical trial.
informed consent -Patients are informed of risks and they agree to participate in a study.
placebo effect -Patients believe that they are getting a medicine but they aren't and they get better.
dependent variable -The variable in an experiment that is measured.
independent variable -The variable in an experiment that is being tested.
controlled variable -The variable(s) in an experiment that are controlled/kept the same.
reproducible -An experiment that produces similar results each time.
variable -Something in an experiment that can change.
qualitative data -Descriptive information using words only.
quantitative data -Numerical information that is measured or counted.
ecology -The study of how living things interact with one another and their environment.
organism -A living thing.
population -A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
fluctuate -To rise and fall.
food chain -A diagram showing a/one particular example of feeding relationships in an ecosystem.
food web -A diagram showing all feeding relationships in an ecosystem.
predator -An animal that hunts and eats other animal(s) for food.
prey -An animal that is hunted for food.
producer -An organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis.
consumer -An organism that eats other living things for energy.
trophic level -A feeding level in a food chain or web.
energy pyramid -A diagram that shows the available energy at each feeding level in an ecosystem.
decomposer -An organism that breaks down dead organisms and recycles nutrients back into the environment.
cellular respiration -The process of breaking down sugar in a cell to release energy.
carrying capacity -The largest population an ecosystem can support over time.
limiting factor -An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing.
photosynthesis -The process by which plants use energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into food.
chloroplast -The part of a plant cell that is the site of photosynthesis.
chlorophyll -Green pigment in the chloroplast that captures light energy for photosynthesis
phenomenon -A simple or amazing event related to how the world and universe work.
plausible -An idea that makes sense and is consistent with observations and other evidence.
axis -A imaginary line around which an object rotates
rotate, rotation -To spin on an axis
lunar cycle -A complete set of the moon's phases beginning with new moon, takes approx 29 1/2 days to complete
new moon -Moon phase where none of the lighted side of the moon is visible from Earth
crescent moon -Moon phase where less than half of the lighted side is visible from Earth
gibbous moon -Moon phase where more than half but not all of the lighted side of the moon is visible from Earth
first quarter moon -Moon phase where the moon is waxing and half of the moon's lighted side is visible from Earth
last quarter moon -Moon phase where the moon is waning and half the lighted side is visible from Earth
full moon -Moon phase where all of the lighted side is visible from Earth
waxing -When the moon phase is getting bigger each night
waning -When the moon phase is getting smaller each night
