| affix | noun: prefix or a suffix |
| affix | verb: to attach a part to the beginning or end of a word; to attach something |
| coinage | the invention of new words; an invented word or phrase; |
| coinage | the making of metal coins; metal currency |
| colloquial | typical of informal language; conversational |
| diminutive | noun: a suffix that indicates small size, youth, familiarity, affection or contempt |
| diminutive | noun: a nickname indicating affection or familiarity |
| diminutive | adjective: extremely small; tiny |
| metonymy | a figure of speech that substitutes a word with a different but closely associated word |
| oxymoron | an expression that contains contradictory terms Example: jumbo shrimp |
| palindrome | a word or expression that is spelled the same backward and forward |
| portmanteau word | a word formed by combining the sounds and meanings of two different words. Example`combine "channel" and "tunnel" to form "chunnel" |
| spoonerism | an often comical switching of the first sounds of two or more words. EXAMPLE: "Lack of pies" is a spoonerism for "pack of lies" |
