| Term | Definition | Examples |

| Antonym | A word that is the opposite (or almost opposite in meaning) as another word. | high.....low fast.....slow |
| Homonym | A word having the same (or almost the same) pronunciation as another word but with a different meaning and spelling. | write.....right bee.....be |
| Homograph | A word having the same spelling as another word,but a different meaning. | State your case. The state of Alabama is home. |
| Prefix | A syllable or syllables placed at the beginning of a word. | sub-marine un-decided *Not all words has a prefix and/or suffix |
| Suffix | A syllable or syllables placed at the end of a word. | fix(ed) believ(able) *Not all words has a prefix and/or suffix |
| Root | The main part of the word to which prefixes and suffixes may be added. | come in out(come) act in re(act)ion The Root is not always a real word Ex: Reliable Prefix(Re) Root(li) Suffix(able) |
| Denotation | Is a word's actual dictionary definition. | measure- to find the size or amount |
| Connotation | Is the tone of a word. It is the emotions or associations a word normally arouses in people using, hearing, or reading the word. | Connotation of a word: 1.Favorable 2. Unfavorable 3.Neutral 1.kiss-Favorable;Unfavorable;Neutral 2.fear-Unfavorable 3.money- Favorable;Unfavorable 4.hate-Unfavorable *Everybody has their own opinion |
| Literal Usage | When a word is used by its strict dictionary definition. | I love (mushrooms) on my pizza |
| Figurative Usage | When a word is used in a symbolic, slang, or non-literal way. | Her problems (mushroomed) after she ran away from home. |
| Analogy | Is a comparison in which one finds the relationship between two words. | Find is to lose as take is the give. |
| Context Clues | Are built into a sentence to guide the reader to the correct answer on vocabulary exercises, classroom tests, and even SAT tests. | Three types as: 1.Restatement 2.Contrast 3.Inference |
| Restatement | Consist of a synonym for a missing word. | When I told my teacher I was moving, she did not seem sad to see me _____. a.clean, *b.depart, or c.return. |
