Specific vocabulary expected to know for end-of-year TEST

sentence a group of words that express a complete thought
declarative a type of sentence that makes a statement or tells something
interrogative a type of sentence that asks something
exclamatory a type of sentence that shows strong feeling
imperative a type of sentence that commands someone to do something or makes a request
subject part of a sentence that names whom or what the sentence is about--Answers who is the doer.
predicate part of the sentence that tells what the subject does or has. It can also describe what the subject is or is like.--Answers what action is taking place
fragment does not express a complete thought--may be missing a subject , predicate or both.
complete subject includes all of the words in the subject of the sentence
complete predicate includes all of the words in the predicate of the sentence
simple subject the main word/noun or group of words in the complete subject
simple predicate the main word/verb or group of words in the complete predicate
compound subject two or more subjects/nouns that have the same predicate joined by and, or, but
compound predicate two or more verbs that have the same subject joined by and, or, but
compound sentence a sentence that contains two or more simple sentences
complex sentence a sentence that has one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses
run-on two or more sentences incorrectly written as one sentence
main clause a group of words containing a subject and a predicate (independent)
subordinate clause is a group of words in a sentence that cannot stand alone as a sentence (dependent)
noun--common & proper a word that names a person, place, thing or idea...school or All Saints Catholic
action verb a word that expresses an action, such as run, inspire, create, jump
linking verb a word that expresses a state of being, such as is, was, were, have, are
direct object a word that receives the action of a verb. It answers the question whom? or what? after an action verb making it a transitive verb.
indirect object a word that answers the question to whom? or for whom? the action was done. It always comes before the direct object in a sentence.
subject pronoun A personal pronoun that is used as a subject. Examples: I, you, he, she,it, we, they.
object pronoun A personal pronoun that is used as the direct or indirect object of a verb. Examples: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.
possessive pronoun A pronoun in the possessive case. It shows who or what has something. Examples: my, your, her, his, its, our, your, their, mine, yours...
predicate nominative or predicate noun a noun that follows a linking verb and tells what the subject is..answers what?
predicate adjective an adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject ...answers what?
adjective a word that describes a noun or a pronoun...beautiful, smart...
proper adjective are adjectives formed from proper nouns...Italian, French...
demonstrative adjective Pronouns used to point out something...this, that, these, those.
adverb a word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb usually ends in -ly...tells how, when, where, why, to what extent, or under what conditions.
conjunction a word used to connect parts of a sentence...and, but, or, for, so, yet, nor...
preposition a word that relates a noun or pronoun to some other word in a sentence... of, during, after, to, from, inside, below..."whatever a plane can do to a cloud"
object of the preposition the noun or pronoun that ends the prepositional phrase
adjective phrase a phrase that modifies or describes a noun in the main clause
adverb phrase a phrase that modifies or describes a verb in the main clause
