RMS Literary Vocabulary Chapter 1 (HOLT)

TermDefinition
summarizing to restate in your own words the story's main events
conflict the struggle or problem in the story
setting the where and when the story's action takes place
plot a series of related events that make up the story
external conflict a struggle coming from an outside force such as the weather or another character
internal conflict a struggle coming from within the character such as overcoming fear or learning self control
complications additional problems
climax the exciting part of the story where the conflict begins to be resolved
resolution near the end of the story where the events are wrapped up and the problems solved
summary a short restatement of the important ideas and events of a story
retelling identifying the basic situation, conflict, climax and resolution of the story
sequencing the actual order of the story events
