| compass rose | the symbol on a map that shows the directions |

| key | small section on a map that explains what the symbols mean |
| legend | a small section on a map that explains what the symbols mean |
| map | a flat picture of part or all of the earth |
| scale | a small chart that shows the distance represented on a map |
| symbol | a mark or a small drawing on a map that represents something else |
| axis | the imaginary center line around which the earth rotates |
| continent | a major landmass |
| equataor | the line of latitude that divides the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres |
| latitude | imaginary lines that measure distance from the equator; these lines run from side to side on a globe or a map |
| longitude | imaginary lines that measure distance from the prime meridian; these lines run from top to bottom on a globe or a map |
| ocean | a large body of salt water |
| prime meridian | the line of longitude that divides the earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres |
| Tropic of Cancer | the line of latitude exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole |
| Tropic of Capricorn | the line of latitude exactly halfway between the equator and the South Pole |
| coordinates | the latitude and longitude that describe the absolute location of a place |
| grid | a set of regularly spaced horizontal and vertical lines that form squares |
| elevation | the height of an area above sea level |
| general-purpose map | a map that gives a basic picture of an area; includes political and physical maps |
| physical map | a map that shows the physical features of an area, such as mountains, rivers and plains |
| political map | a map that shows the human-made boundaries of countries or regions |
| special-purpose map | a map that shows information about a specific topic |
